Man Believes His Son Got Salmonella From Peanut Butter

Mario Pena brought his one-year-old son to Del Sol Medical Center, because he believed he had symptoms of Salmonella.

It started when Pena said he learned he fed his son Peter Pan peanut butter that may have contained Salmonella.

"We had that brand of peanut butter with the right code or registration on the lid," Pena said.

Pena said his son started feeling sick Thursday and when he watched the news about the recall he put two-and-two together

"We saw the symptoms that were given there and he matched these symptoms. Later on, he vomited again and had diarrhea," said Pena.

When those symptoms escalated, Pena decided to take him to Del Sol.

When Pena and his son arrived at Del Sol he said he told the doctor that he thought his son may have contracted Salmonella because he had eaten Peter Pan Peanut butter. When KFOX spoke with officials, they said no one had come to their hospital complaining of being contaminated.

"We have not seen any thing. We have seen rota virus, which is what we get this time of year, but not Salmonella," said Caryn Iverson, assistant chief nursing officer.

Hospital administrators said it may be awhile before we know if there are cases here because it takes some time for testing to be done.

"What they will do is ask for a sample of stool, testing it just for Salmonella and that's gonna 24 to 48 hours," Iverson said.

Del Sol health officials continue to monitor this outbreak. Meanwhile, Pena hopes his son will get better.

Officials with area hospitals said they have not seen any patients believed to have Salmonella poisoning from peanut butter.

The two brands of peanut butter that have been recalled are the Peter Pan peanut butter and Great Value peanut butter with the product code 2111 on the lid.

If you think you or your children ate the peanut butter, doctors said you don't need to worry unless you start showing symptoms which include severe stomach pain and diarrhea.

If these symptoms come up than you should see a doctor immediately.

Also, if you think your child has it make sure to keep them hydrated because doctors told KFOX that's how a child can become the sickest.

To keep from getting sick, doctors suggest washing your hands because they said that's how Salmonella is spread.
