If you have the jar of peanut butter, do not throw it away or return it to the store where you bought it. It is evidence. Hundreds of people in at more than 39 states have become sickened from eating contaminated peanut butter. Some illnesses occurred in the late summer of 2006 through today.
It is important to recognize the symptoms of Salmonella Poisoning, which can include Diarrhea, Fever, Abdominal pain, Dehydration, and high fever.
The most common symptoms illness from most Salmonella poisoning is diarrhea and intestinal distress. Diarrhea, an upset stomach and abdominal pains may result from an infection of this type. Fever is sometimes present.
Salmonella poisoning from peanut butter presents symptoms, particularly diarrhea, that typically appear six to seventy-two hours after eating the peanut butter. Fortunately, the illness is usually mild enough so that no treatment is required, and victims recover in after a few days of distress.
In rare cases, Salmonella poisoning can cause severe dehydration. Occasionally peanut butter related Salmonella cases require hospitalization and treatment with antibiotics.
Reiter's Syndrome
Most people with diarrhea recover completely without treatment. However, in some cases Salmonellosis can lead to Reiter's syndrome. People with Reiter's syndrome develop joint pains, irritation of the eyes, and a painful sensation during urination. This condition can last for months or years. It sometimes leads to a difficult-to-treat case of chronic arthritis. Antibiotic treatment for the original Salmonella poisoning does not make a difference in the later development of arthritis.
Salmonella Symptoms and Typhoid
One type of Salmonella, Salmonella Typhi, can cause an illness called typhoid. Typhoid, characterized by a high fever, is life-threatening. The fever may be accompanied by a feeling of weakness, headache, and in some cases, rose-colored spots. Although typhoid fever is common in the developing world, there are only about 400 cases reported in the U.S. each year. The vast majority of those cases are acquired while traveling in foreign countries. There is a vaccine for typhoid fever that is recommended for people traveling to the developing world. People who are diagnosed with typhoid are given a treatment of antibiotics.
