The Galveston County Daily News reported that 1-year-old Tonantzin Scarlet Gonzales-Camacho of McKinney died on Sunday, July 3, in an accident in Dickinson involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck. The truck was being driven by Gonzales-Camacho's father, 21-year-old Benjamin A. Gonzales, and was also occupied by her mother, 27-year-old Blanca Camacho-Tellez, and another passenger.
The accident occurred at 6:26 p.m. in the 3800 block of Interstate 45 north when the driver of the pickup truck lost control of the vehicle and struck a retaining wall in the north side of the highway. The vehicle traveled across all lanes of traffic and struck another retaining wall on the other side, according to news reports.
The motorcycle, occupied by 30-year-old Roshun Flores of Texas City and 36-year-old Nicole Flores of La Marque, slid to avoid hitting the wrecked pickup truck and came to a stop against the vehicle.
Both the toddler and mother were transported to Clear Lake Regional Hospital in Webster and later to Memorial Hermann Hospital of Houston, where the toddler was pronounced dead. The mother's condition is not known at this time.
Police are still investigating the accident to determine a cause for the wreck. The Daily News reported that Gonzales passed a field sobriety test but was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of driving without a license, and as of July 4 he had a hold from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while he was being held in the Dickinson County Jail.
Roshun and Nicole Flores were taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch hospital, where Roshun was listed in good condition and Nicole was listed in serious condition.
A representative of the Dickinson Police Department could not be reached for comment.
