Premises Liability | Worker dies of injuries at hotel demolition

GALVESTON -- A worker injured when part of a second level collapsed on him during demolition of a hotel has died. The Galveston County medical examiner's office identified the worker as 65-year-old Tauelangi Angilau of Salt Lake City. A half-ton slab fell on him Tuesday during demolition of the Flagship Hotel, a longtime landmark on a beachfront pier. City officials ordered the demolition halted after the accident until assessments and any needed corrections are completed. The seven-story, 225-room hotel opened in 1965 on what had been the Pleasure Pier, but it never reopened after severe damage from Hurricane Ike in 2008. It is being demolished to make way for an amusements midway.
