  • Car Flips in Arlington Pond after Accident, Killing 1
    Oct 10, 2011

ARLINGTON, Texas - One person died early Friday morning after a collision between two vehicles caused one car to land upside-down in a pond.

The dead man was a passenger in that car, but the driver was able to get out and was taken to the hospital, according to Arlington police public information officer Tiara Ellis Richard.

Richard says it's too early to tell if the two cars were racing, but says the people in both cars knew each other.

The accident happened at 5:30 a.m. in the 4200 block of N. Collins at Mossier Valley Road. Both cars were headed north on Collins and were possibly speeding, police said.

The cars collided and skidded into a field on the side of a road, police said. But the silver car kept going and overturned in the pond.

Richards said a man and a woman in the other car were able to walk away from the accident. Police found them north of the crash site.

The driver of the silver car was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The medical examiner will release the dead victim's name after notifying his family.

  • Boy, 10, dies after wreck at Arlington intersection
    Sep 02, 2011

ARLINGTON - A 10-year-old Arlington boy died early Friday morning from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle wreck Thursday evening that investigators believe was alcohol-related.

Tavian Sabur was pronounced dead at 4:26 a.m. at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth.

Walter Tendai Chidyausiku, 29, has been arrested on two charges of suspicion of intoxication assault in the case and could face more serious charges because of Tavian's death and pending blood test results, Arlington police officials said.

Arlington police stated in a news release that Tavian was a passenger in a car being driven by his mother when the wreck happened about 6 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Nathan Lowe Road and Petra Drive.

The mother had driven into the intersection, after first stopping at a four-way stop, when her car was struck by a westbound SUV whose driver had not stopped at the intersection, the release states.

Tavian was taken by ambulance to the Medical Center of Arlington and later flown by helicopter to Cook Children's. His death has been ruled a homicide caused by multiple blunt trauma suffered in the wreck, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office.

Tavian's mother was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Chidyausiku, the driver of the SUV, was not seriously injured. He was arrested at the scene of the wreck after officers discovered indications that alcohol was a factor in the collision, the release states.

  • Father gives details of hit-and-run incident that injured Tyler man
    Aug 16, 2011

FORT WORTH - A Tyler man critically injured early Saturday in the West 7th area was hit by a vehicle in a parking garage before he was found, his father said late Monday.

Tim Morby of Houston said his son, Grant Morby, 24, was on a second-floor parking garage at The Lofts at West 7th on his way to a friend's apartment.

Grant Morby was in critical condition late Monday in a Fort Worth hospital with a severely lacerated liver after being hit by the vehicle.

Tim Morby said that a man in a white pickup apparently backed his vehicle out of parking space and hit his son. A woman was in the passenger seat of the pickup.

But the pickup driver drove out of the garage before authorities arrived. The driver, however, was stopped by a security guard, presenting identification and claiming to have insurance, Tim Morby said late Monday.

Grant Morby was visiting the friend and they had been at a bar Friday night and Saturday morning. He was found about 2 a.m. Saturday in the garage in the 900 block of Norwood Street, a block south of West Seventh.

Traffic investigators "were not initially called out to this scene," police Sgt. Pedro Criado said Monday. "However, they now have a lead on the follow-up investigation."

Grant Morby's friend lives at Norwood and Morton streets near West Seventh, Tim Morby said.

"They only had to walk about a half a block to the bar where they went that night. Somehow they all got separated," he said.

The friend arrived at his apartment at 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

At 2:10 a.m., Tim Morby and his wife received a call from a woman who found their son's phone.

"It (the phone) wasn't locked, so she found a number ... and called us," Tim Morby said. "She said that Grant had been hit by a vehicle, that he was in pain and on the ground."

Tim Morby spoke Monday in a telephone interview from Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. He and his wife drove to Fort Worth from Galveston on Saturday morning.

  • Driver of car in fatal Wise County crash remains hospitalized
    Jul 25, 2011

The 17-year-old driver of a Ford Mustang that crashed early Saturday in Wise County, killing four of his passengers, remained in serious condition Sunday at a Fort Worth hospital.

Danny Ray Nalley of Fort Worth was in John Peter Smith Hospital, where he has been since his car collided with a Ford F-350.

Killed in the crash were Kevin Brickey, 19, of Blue Mound, and Vincent "Vinnie" Williams, 19, of Wakefield, Mass. On Sunday a third victim was identified as Vincent James LaGrassa, 19, of Fort Worth. A fourth victim had not been identified Sunday by the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

Nalley and Brickey graduated in June from Saginaw High School, where Nalley played football, according to an Eagle Mountain-Saginaw school official.

The driver of the pickup, Richard Glenn Rand, 30, of Burleson, was taken to a hospital, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper said Sunday that the crash occurred when Nalley passed in a no-passing zone and crashed into the pickup on Farm Road 730 in Wise County, north of Decatur and about 50 miles north of Fort Worth.

"Additional factors may arise later as the investigation progresses," DPS trooper Lonny Haschel said in an e-mail Sunday.

The teens were returning from a party at the LBJ Grasslands, and Nalley was trying to pass a group of friends, relatives of LaGrassa said Sunday.

The crash was reported shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday on the farm road near the intersection with County Road 2445.

Rand told DPS troopers that he was northbound on Farm Road 730 when a southbound Mustang moved into the northbound lane. The Mustang and the pickup swerved into a ditch and collided.
