An 8-year-old boy died after being struck by a pickup Wednesday night close to his home in south Grand Prairie.
Jordan League was riding a bicycle east on Christopher Court on the same block as his house when he was hit at an intersection by a 1985 Dodge pickup driving south on Christopher Street, Grand Prairie police said in a news release.
League, who attended third grade at Zavala Elementary School in Grand Prairie, was taken by ambulance to Medical Center of Arlington where he later died, the release states.
The driver slammed on the brakes and swerved to the left to avoid the boy but the right front quarter of the pickup hit the bicycle, throwing the child to the ground, the release states.
The driver stayed at the scene to help, Grand Prairie police spokesman Eric Hansen said.
League was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and suffered a head injury, the release states.
Another 8-year-old boy was riding with him at the time and was not injured, Hansen said.
The driver of the truck, Michael McNeal, 39, was arrested at the scene because did not have a driver's license and had previous violations for not having one, Hansen said.
He faces a misdemeanor charge of driving with an invalid license, which carries a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, Hansen said.
The truck was traveling at or below the 30 mph speed limit at the time of the accident, the release states.
Investigators believe the cause of the accident was because League did not yield to the truck, the release states.
