A local man died Monday morning in a two-car crash on Eddy County Road 206, also known as Illinois Camp Road, according to information from the New Mexico State Police.
Police and sheriff's deputies were called just after 7 a.m. to the crash site north of Carlsbad, near Alkali Road.
Dead at the scene was Andres Alcocer, 27, of Carlsbad, who was the driver of a 1997 Nissan Quest van.
The second vehicle, a 2002 Dodge pickup truck, was driven by 6l-year-old Charles Hallman, of Winnsboro, Texas. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles.
State Police investigators, who worked much of the morning at the scene, found that the Nissan was headed south, while the Dodge was traveling northbound. They do not know the reason, but they were able to determine that the Nissan veered into the northbound lane, and into the path of the pickup truck.
The result was an off-set front end collision that severely damaged both vehicles.
Hallman sustained severe leg injuries and was taken by ambulance to Carlsbad Medical Center. He later was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Police report that Deputy Medical Investigator Gerri Lawson pronounced Alcocer dead at the scene, due to his injuries from the crash.
Investigators said speed and driver inattention contributed to the severity of the crash. Alcohol was not involved as a factor in the accident, police said.
