
A construction worker at the Monroe County Water Authority Eastside Water Supply Treatment Plant Project was killed. It happened around 11 a.m. at the site on Lake Road in Webster.
The victim was an intake tunnel contractor for Southland Contracting which is based out of Austin, Texas.
Southland Contracting is currently working on building a water treatment plant for the Monroe County Water Authority. The company is about halfway into a two-year project to build a tunnel for an intake water pipe out into Lake Ontario.
News 10NBC is told the victim was one of five workers on the crew. At the time of the accident, it appears the victim was operating a train which removes material from where the boring machine was digging at the time. The details of how the man was killed are unknown at this time.
OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration -- is at the scene of the accident investigating.
Water Authority Executive Director Nicholas Noce said, "One of the tunnel contractor workers was operating a piece of equipment that had led to a fatality. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. OSHA is on sight investigating the incident. Worker safety is paramount for the Monroe County Water Authority. The work will be shut down until such as OSHA provides us with a clear approval to restart any work."
At this time, the company is not saying whether the victim is from out of town or the Rochester area. His name has not been released at this time.
The Water Authority says no other accidents have happened at the Webster site.
The plant is supposed to be online and processing drinking water by early 2013.
