Fatal wreck closes eastbound I-30 in west Fort Worth

A 13-year-old boy was killed in a wreck involving an 18-wheeler that shut down eastbound Interstate 30 in Fort Worth on Thursday morning.

Police said the driver's son, identified by the medical examiner as Hector Hernandez, was apparently in the sleeper portion of the tractor and died at the scene.

The man driving the 18-wheeler was taken to the hospital. His condition is unknown at this time, police said.
Police said the driver was eastbound at 7400 I-30 and for an unknown reason drifted to the right, jumped the median, took out a metal guard rail and smashed into a bridge support, breaking it.
TxDot officials said the road will be closed possibly until Friday night.

Crews are currently working to secure the bridge's support beams, said Val Lopez, TxDOT spokesman.
"Our first concern is motorist safety," Lopez said.
Lopez said two of the three lanes of eastbound I-30 should open sometime Friday as well as one of the two frontage-road lanes.

The Lockheed Boulevard bridge over I-30 will remain closed while TxDOT officials inspect the bridge to determine the extent of the damage.

"That will take longer to evaluate," Lopez said. "We need to see what kind of load it can take."
Police closed eastbound I-30 at West Loop 820 because of the wreck.

Lighted road signs in the Willow Park area were directing eastbound motorists to exit at Interstate 20 or to take West Loop 820 North. Motorists also could take Spur 580 to avoid the closure but delays were expected.
