Father gives details of hit-and-run incident that injured Tyler man

FORT WORTH - A Tyler man critically injured early Saturday in the West 7th area was hit by a vehicle in a parking garage before he was found, his father said late Monday.

Tim Morby of Houston said his son, Grant Morby, 24, was on a second-floor parking garage at The Lofts at West 7th on his way to a friend's apartment.

Grant Morby was in critical condition late Monday in a Fort Worth hospital with a severely lacerated liver after being hit by the vehicle.

Tim Morby said that a man in a white pickup apparently backed his vehicle out of parking space and hit his son. A woman was in the passenger seat of the pickup.

But the pickup driver drove out of the garage before authorities arrived. The driver, however, was stopped by a security guard, presenting identification and claiming to have insurance, Tim Morby said late Monday.

Grant Morby was visiting the friend and they had been at a bar Friday night and Saturday morning. He was found about 2 a.m. Saturday in the garage in the 900 block of Norwood Street, a block south of West Seventh.

Traffic investigators "were not initially called out to this scene," police Sgt. Pedro Criado said Monday. "However, they now have a lead on the follow-up investigation."

Grant Morby's friend lives at Norwood and Morton streets near West Seventh, Tim Morby said.

"They only had to walk about a half a block to the bar where they went that night. Somehow they all got separated," he said.

The friend arrived at his apartment at 1:50 a.m. Saturday.

At 2:10 a.m., Tim Morby and his wife received a call from a woman who found their son's phone.

"It (the phone) wasn't locked, so she found a number ... and called us," Tim Morby said. "She said that Grant had been hit by a vehicle, that he was in pain and on the ground."

Tim Morby spoke Monday in a telephone interview from Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. He and his wife drove to Fort Worth from Galveston on Saturday morning.
