Major Accident Traps FedEx Driver, Closes Highway 36

Posted on Feb 08, 2012

A major accident involving a pickup and a small FedEx truck trapped a driver and closed Highway 36 for more than an hour Tuesday morning southeast of Abilene.
Highway 36 was closed at County Road 605 because a helicopter was awaiting to transport the truck driver to the hospital.
Officials at the scene reported that the driver was freed about 10 a.m. and transported by helicopter to Hendrick Medical Center beginning at 10:13 a.m.
Troy Sosebee, 38, the driver of the FedEx truck, was trapped inside his truck, and first responders had to call for extrication equipment and vehicles from the Abilene Fire Department.
J.W. Smith, 75, the driver of the pickup, was also transported to a local Hendrick Medical Center.
The Department of Public Saftey told KTXS the crash is under investigation.
DPS said they were getting conflicting stories from both drivers and one eyewitness.
The witness first told DPS officers that the white Chevy pickup failed to stop at a stop sign where CR 605 intersects with Highway 36, southeast of Abilene Regional Airport.
But after questioning further, the witness retracted his statement and claimed he didn't see the actual impact.
DPS has now released a crash report confirming the white Chevy pickup, was driving south on highway 36 and had slowed down to turn left onto CR 605.
That's when the FedEx truck hit the pickup from behind.
The Potosi and Eula fire departments first tried to free the FedEx driver but called for help from the Abilene Fire Department.
The Taylor and Callahan county sheriff's departments were assisting at the scene, in addition to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Highway 36 was re-opened after the extricated driver was flown to Hendrick Medical Center.
