A Little Elm woman lost her life Saturday morning in a one-car accident on Eldorado Parkway in front of the post office.
Little Elm resident Anita Reyes, 23, was a passenger in her own 2007 Honda Accord. The car was driven by Michael Johnson, 23, also of Little Elm.
The car came off the Little Elm Bridge eastbound on Eldorado Parkway. It hit the new fire hydrant in front of the post office. The car began to flip over, driver side over passenger side and became airborne. Reyes was thrown clear of the vehicle and was dead at the scene. She was not wearing her seat belt.
Johnson, who was wearing his seat belt, was transported to the hospital by CareFlite. A blood test has been submitted to the Department of Public Safety laboratory in Garland.
Witnesses to the accident state the car was traveling more than 70 mph.
“Any time there is a crash that involves death or serious bodily injury we do a mandatory blood draw. The state of Texas allows us to do that,” Little Elm Police Sgt. Brad Wilcox said.
Wilcox said he suspects the accident was alcohol-related.
The accident is under investigation pending the results of the blood test. Johnson has not been charged with anything.
“I can't think of a more perfect example of how a seat belt would have saved a life,” Wilcox said.
Reyes' death is the first traffic fatality in Little Elm this year. Last year there was only one traffic fatality in Little Elm. That death resulted from a motorcycle accident on U.S. Highway 380.
