ARLINGTON -- After four youths were struck in separate incidents by vehicles this month and two of them died, Arlington police are reminding drivers to be extra cautious around areas where children may gather and for parents to emphasize safety with their children.
"It nice outside, and everybody is enjoying the weather," traffic officer David Szatkowski said. "We just want to be sure people are taking steps to protect themselves and their families and to be aware of their surroundings."
In the most recent incident, a 15-year-old girl was fatally injured Monday night when she was hit by a vehicle in the 3000 block of South Cooper Street, police reported.
The girl was crossing Cooper near Mayfield Road when she was struck about 9:10 p.m. She was pronounced dead at 9:35 p.m. at Medical Center of Arlington. The Tarrant County medical examiner's office identified her as Jennifer Herring of Arlington.
The vehicle did not stop, and police were looking for the driver. Anyone with information is asked to contact Arlington police at 817-459-5700.
It is the 10th traffic fatality in Arlington this year, coming 10 days after Frida Flores, 7, was struck and killed while riding her bike at a north Arlington apartment complex. The driver, who had just stopped for another child on a bicycle, spoke with police at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
A day earlier, an 11-year-old boy stepped into the roadway near New York Avenue and Mitchell Street and was struck by the mirror of a pickup after school. The boy had been looking at his cellphone when he stepped into the street.
On April 4, a 15-year-old girl was hit by a vehicle at about 7 a.m. as she crossed the street while walking to Bowie High School.
Parents should speak to their children about being aware of vehicles near roadways and parking lots, Szatkowski. It is also a good time to remind juvenile drivers to obey the speed limit and avoid distractions while behind the wheel, he said.
Police are also conducting a crime and crash reduction effort at hot spots around the city.
Using data on injury crashes and crime locations, police identified areas where they hope a stronger patrol presence will cut down on both categories.
"It's a concerted effort involving the traffic division, the patrol division and the investigations division," Szatkowski said. "Hopefully this will help us do good police work."
