A Brownwood teen was hospitalized briefly after a two-car collision, but DPS officials credited the boy's quick reactions in preventing injuries to others.
The 17-year-old Brownwood High School student, driving a Ford pickup, was traveling on CC Woodson Road at 10 p.m. Wednesday when a Cadillac exiting Victory Life Church pulled out in front of him, according to Trooper Mike Sams of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The teen driver swerved to the right to avoid the Cadillac, went over the curb into a grassy area, and lost control of the pickup, Sams said. The pickup went across two lanes and into oncoming traffic, where it collided with a GMC Yukon.
Sams said the crash was "an angled head-on collision." The teen, who was the sole occupant of the truck, was taken to the hospital. No serious injuries were reported for the occupants of the Yukon.
Sams said the teen's actions to avoid hitting the Cadillac were to be commended.
"The kid did an awesome job, because he would have directly hit the passenger," Sams said. "It would have been a T-bone right in the door if he hadn't."
Crash investigators said the teen was traveling under the speed limit at the time of the crash.
The Brownwood High student was released from the hospital Thursday after being held for observation.
