A tractor trailer carrying a boat clipped a construction crew's painting supplies on the underside of a bridge on Interstate 635, sending cables streaming down and snarling traffic for much of the day Saturday in northwest Dallas.
Traffic snaked slowly by at the intersection of Interstates 35E and 635 after the 11:40 a.m. accident in what is usually a high-traffic area. A Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman said a contractor was hired to paint the I-635 bridge over I-35E and had placed a series of metal sheets and cables to collect dripping paint.
It was unclear whether any workers were painting at the time of the accident, but no injuries were reported.
Several cars on I-35E were damaged, however, by the cables that dangled from the overpass.
It was not known if the bridge itself sustained damage.
TxDOT spokeswoman Cynthia Northrop White said it's unclear whether the painting contractor, Intech, or the truck driver was at fault. She said that the metal sheets and cables are designed so that they would not impede traffic.
Dallas police were also helping to investigate and filter traffic through the area.
"We're not sure exactly what happened," Northrop White said. "If it is determined that there was negligence on the part of the contractor, they will be liable for any damages."
Cleanup crews shut down the westbound I-635 ramp to I-35E and I-35E northbound traffic was fed through one lane until about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, when all lanes were reopened.
