Posted on Apr 26, 2011

Two people died after the motorcycle they were riding on slammed into a utility pole in Mineral Wells Friday.

Ernest Gillespie, 27, of Mineral Wells, was driving west in the 1900 block of Southeast 16th Street at about 1 a.m. Friday when the motorcycle went off the roadway and traveled a total of 234 feet before striking two gas meters and bringing down a utility pole, Mineral Wells Police Chief Mike McAllester said.

Gillespie died at John Peter Smith Hospital Monday afternoon, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's listing.

Gillespie's passenger, 43-year-old Deborah Walker, also of Mineral Wells, died at the scene, McAllester said.

Both riders were not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, McAllester said.

Speed was a factor in the crash and the street had a 30-mile-per-hour speed limit, McAllester said.

Investigators are waiting on toxicology tests, McAllester said.
