Vehicle Accident | Boy injured when Nacogdoches man rear-ends school bus

Posted on Mar 24, 2011

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Nacogdoches Police Department investigated an accident early this morning that involved a passenger car and a loaded school bus.

The accident occurred in the 2600 block of Douglass Road (State Highway 21 West) and was logged at 7:44 a.m.

A 2006 Saturn SUV driven by Vincente Marrero, 19, of Nacogdoches was eastbound on Douglass Road and struck the rear of a school bus owned and operated by the Nacogdoches Independent School District. The bus was driven by Larry Reynard, Jr. of Nacogdoches. The bus was stopped to make a pick-up of students. At the time of the accident, the bus was loaded with 63 elementary students, ranging in age from four to eleven years old.

One child, an 8 year old boy, was taken to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor, non-life threatening injuries.

The remaining students were transferred to another NISD bus and were delivered to school.

No citations have been issued in the accident yet, though the report indicates Marrero failed to control his speed.

"Motorists should pay attention to their surroundings, road conditions and speeds at all times, but it is important to remember that during the school year, the mornings and afternoons are critical due to the bus traffic," police spokesman Sgt. Greg Sowell said. "Motorists should be especially watchful for school buses and mindful of their cargo: our children."
